In the mountains and under them . . .

Went to the Shenandoahs this week, and stopped off at nearby Luray Caverns, which was filled with gorgeous stalactites and stalagmites (which, to me, looked a lot like Cthulhu faces; I've got to get out more). Here's the girls in our tent, just one of the dozens of deer that strolled around, a shot from inside the caverns, and a cavern sign meaning "Don't grab the stalactites," but which might also mean "Hands off Argentina."

Do you camp often? I've only gotten into myself in the last year since Eddie joined the cub scouts. We've been on two trips so far, the first being an overnight and this weekend was a two night stay. I love it, but I need to learn about pitching my tent on more level ground. We were sliding all over the place at night.

This was our first time. It wasn't the full deep woods experience. You reserve a specific spot in Shen National Park, and it's got a built-in fire pit, you're only a couple minutes from a bathroom, etc. There is, however, no cell phone service, and, because you're 3,000 feet up, you run the risk of spending the day in a cloud. Our first days were lovely and clear. Our last day, we couldn't see 30 feet in front of us.
