Christmas movie #1

As always, we'll be working our way through a bunch of holiday classics between the night after Thanksgiving and New Year's. Tonight's Christmas season movie with the kids was 1951's The Lemon Drop Kid, starring Bob Hope. The girls love Guys and Dolls, so I figured this story, also based on the works of Damon Runyon, would be a hit. It was. Hope plays a small-time hustler who has the 23 shopping days until Christmas to come up with the $10,000 he owes a gangster. My favorite line is this bit of dialog between William Frawley (Fred Mertz of I Love Lucy fame) as a street corner Santa and a little girl.

Girl: Are you coming to my house on Christmas Eve, Santa?
WF: Sure, little girl.
Girl: And are you bringing a doll?
WF: No, my doll has to work Christmas Eve.
