Kevin Lauderdale and the Magic ATM Machine

There's a new ATM machine at work. It's all touch screen technology, and, if you want, it can save your preferences. As soon as you insert your card, it will automatically know to display text in English, and, say, it will know that when you touch the Withdraw bar, you want $60 taken from your checking account.

But what I used it for today was to deposit a check. First, no more deposit envelopes. When you hit Deposit, a little video pops up showing that you should endorse your check and feed it into the little slot at the top of the machine. The video even shows you which way to face your check in case you weren't sure. THEN . . .
the screen shows you the image of your check! Brilliant. In case you fed your check in the wrong way, this is your chance to eject it and try again. In case you entered the wrong amount, this is your chance to compare your stated amount with the amount actually on the check.

I may be simple small town boy, but I thought this was great. It's not often there is an actual improvement in technology that makes a mundane action fun.

I like the envelope-less deposits, but the idea of the machine remembering your preferences is a little unnerving.
