In honor of the passing of rock musician Gerry Rafferty yesterday, I present this link to a cover by the Foo Fighters. They use belting guitar licks to replace the tune's famous saxophone riff. Oddly, there are moments when it sounds like a bagpipe -- which is appropriate since Rafferty was Scottish.

I like this a lot.

The E-Bow produces that effect. Scottish New Wave band Big Country is probably the best-known practitioner of the E-Bow; they used it often to achieve a distorted bagpipe-like effect from their guitars, especially on their best-known song, "In a Big Country."

I've always preferred this version of the song.

RIP, Gerry.
