One of the cool things about being a book reviewer for AuthorMagazine.org is that I can request advanced copies of books from publishers. Sometimes they comply, sometimes not. And sometimes I get something I'm really looking forward to. Yesterday my copy of Kevin Smith's Tough Sh*t arrived. (That's what it's really called. It's on the title page and everything.) Basically, he tells the story of his career in an effort to get you too to "go where the puck is going to be" (to quote Wayne Gretzky's dad). After all, if a self-professed lazy slob can achieve success, you can too. If you're a regular listener to his podcasts over at Smodcast.com, you've heard all these before. If not, you'll find it inspirational and foul-mouthed. Best quote so far:

"Self-expression is the heart of all arts -- even movies. But unlike the rest of the arts, movies are a costly fashion in which to tell the world what you're feeling. If I could paint, I'd slap some color on a canvas and it'd communicate who I am. . . . But I'm a filmmaker -- which means I'm the artist who says, "I need to express myself! Quick, get me twenty million dollars and Ben Affleck!"
