“All those years ago…”

Has it really been almost three decades? Amazing. In memory of John Lennon's death, I present the only thing I ever wrote about the Beatles: an essay for McSweeney’s online. This was part of their Short Essays on Favorite Songs series.

Kev - was inspired by the McSweeney's article and your post about introducing your daughter to Star Trek to create a livejournal acct just so I could post a comment.

We're not quite as "careful" as you are when we choose to introduce things to our kids - we just kind of throw it out there and see if they like it. When it came to the Beatles, I can't specifically say when they first heard it, but my son Braden played the heck out of the Yellow Submarine soundtrack when he decided he liked the title track and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (I think that's his fav Beatles song). And then I bought Beatles Rock Band (yup, we're gamers - Bryant's fav is Hey Bulldog, Sarah also like Lucy).

Braden particularly takes to music - when he hears something he likes, he asks for a copy of it, and he learns the lyrics - so he's currently into Weird Al, and my favorite, Crowded House (kind of the Beatles from Down Under, but not really). When the Crowdies go on tour later this year, I've already told the boys I'm taking them to a concert.

Just thought I'd share.

P.S. I got myself a copy of the Beatles - Get Back on ebay a while back (the "bootleg" you picked up in Westwood so many years ago). I'm still a huge fan of that raw version of "Don't Let Me Down". If you look at my facebook profile, you'll notice a link to a music list I have - check it out, I'd be happy to share with you.
