Star Trek Fan: The Next Generation

Tonight my nine-year-old daughter Elizabeth and I watched J.J. Abrams Star Trek on DVD. This was the culmination of a two-year long program to introduce Elizabeth to Star Trek. It was supposed to be only a one-year project, but the film got moved from December 2008 to May 2009, and then we had to wait for the DVD to come out.

I very carefully chose the TOS episodes I showed her, and tried to time them to her outside interests. We started with the “softest” episodes, "The Trouble With Tribbles", "Shore Leave", and "I, Mudd."  We watched "Catspaw" one Halloween and "Who Mourns For Adonis" when she was getting into Greek mythology.  "Mirror, Mirror" was saved for another Halloween, and "Space Seed" and The Wrath of Khan made an excellent double feature. I brought out "A Piece of the Action" when I noticed how much she enjoyed the gangsters in a Tintin comic.

How do you introduce the next generation to Star Trek? Slowly, making it relevant to their other interests. And you never, never mention "Spock’s Brain."

The Abrams film was a big hit, and couple times Elizabeth said, “Hey, just like when. . .” Yep, she got it. She even remembered that Sarek had said at the end of "Journey to Babel," of marrying Amanda, “At the time it seemed the logical thing to do.”

Cool kid.
